Statement: RRSP contributions on overtime pay

Halifax Shipyard will continue matching RRSP contributions on overtime pay until negotiations for the new collective agreement are concluded.

After lunch today, 25 January 2018, about 150 of the our 900 unionized workforce assembled for an hour and requested to meet with management over the expiration of a written agreement whereby we would match Registered Retirement Savings Plan (RRSP) contributions on overtime pay in addition to the normal practice of matching regular pay. We reminded union leaders in November 2017 that the practice of matching RRSP contributions on overtime pay, which was not part of the current Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA), would expire at the end of 2017, which was consistent with the written agreement.

Kevin McCoy, President of Halifax Shipyard, met with the assembled workers to address their concerns.  While continuance of the RRSP payments on overtime should properly be addressed as part of the current negotiations for a new CBA, we agreed to continue the practice to match RRSP contributions on overtime pay until negotiations for the new CBA are concluded.  At the end of the discussion, the shipbuilders resumed their work building great ships for Canada.
